Body filler or automotive putty is one of the most widely used materials in surface preparation and refinishing across auto body shops.

It is a thick, workable paste or cream filler designed to level surface defects and dents on vehicle bodies, preparing them for subsequent priming and topcoating.

Although most body fillers are highly versatile and suitable for various substrates, specific formulations are engineered for specialized materials, such as plastic body fillers.

Selecting and applying the right body filler is essential for achieving an exceptional final finish, allowing repair shops and technicians to maximize profitability by saving time and material consumption on every job.

BODY FILLER: PROPERTIES

Today, the most commonly used body fillers are polyester-based. Polyester fillers are formulated as two-component (2K) systems, requiring a benzoyl peroxide hardener (mixed at 2-3% by weight according to manufacturer specifications) for activation.

When mixed with the hardener, an exothermic chemical reaction generates heat, causing the filler to dry and harden.

Body filler levels metal or plastic surfaces, filling imperfections and creating a smooth finish across the repair area.

It plays a vital role in ensuring adhesion for primers and basecoats; proper filler application optimizes overall refinish quality.

A hallmark of premium body filler is effortless sanding and superior leveling performance.

Note that body fillers do not provide corrosion or rust protection. If metal protection is required, apply an anti-rust, anti-corrosion primer first.

Additionally, body filler cannot act as a direct primer for the topcoat. After sanding, a 2K primer must be applied as an intermediate coat prior to basecoat and 2K protective clearcoat application.

Key characteristics of a high-performance body filler include:

MINIMAL PINHOLES AND HIGH ELASTICITY

Quality body filler resists pinhole formation during application, yielding a smooth, refined surface.

On flexible substrates such as PP plastic, quality filler must offer high elasticity to absorb impacts and vibrations without cracking or peeling (especially on vehicle bumpers).

EASY APPLICATION AND SANDING

Body filler should spread smoothly and evenly across the repair area. Furthermore, it should sand effortlessly without requiring excessive force or repeated passes, shortening overall repair cycles.

STRONG ADHESION

Body filler must deliver strong adhesion to the underlying surface. Matching the right filler to the substrate is critical, as different materials require specific properties to achieve optimal bond strength.

BODY FILLER: CLASSIFICATION

In the past, automotive fillers cured thick and coarse, slowing down sanding and surface preparation for panel beaters and painters.

Over time, automakers introduced intricate body contours and complex styling lines, adopting lightweight, easily moldable materials like plastic and aluminum alongside steel.

The emergence of these new materials required paint manufacturers to engineer advanced body fillers that adhere reliably to diverse substrates without sacrificing hardness, drying speed, or sandability.

Today, a diverse range of specialized body fillers boosts bodyshop productivity and profitability while ensuring superior final results.

These technological advancements require technicians to select the optimal filler tailored to each specific repair substrate:

UNIVERSAL POLY PUTTY

This is the most common filler used in refinish shops. It offers high hardness, durability, and excellent adhesion to steel and sheet metal.

It stands out for its versatility across passenger vehicle and commercial fleet repairs.

Toàn Phú – Minh Tường offers PP-210 in this category—a hard, fast-drying, and exceptionally easy-to-sand automotive body filler.

PLASTIC PUTTY

This filler is recommended for leveling plastic parts (PP plastic). Highly impact-resistant, elastic, and flexible, it provides strong adhesion to various automotive plastics like bumpers and side moldings. It features a softer, non-porous texture. PP-210-PP is our featured product in this category.
